BiometricsSA: Statistics for the Agricultural, Aquatic, Biological, Environmental, Food and Wine Sciences.

Spatial Odyssey

This 2-3 day workshop is aimed at scientists who wish to increase their understanding of spatial analysis in the context of field trials. It is assumed that participants are familiar with basic statistics, including regression and analysis of variance. The statistical environment GenStat will be used for computation. Background knowledge of GenStat is an advantage but not essential. The material will be driven by applications, the aim being to provide insight and understanding of the methods, including difficulties.

Topics that will be covered in this course include:

Spatial Designs

  • Motivating examples
  • Replicated variety trials
  • Single rep trials
  • Trials with multiple treatments

Single Site Analysis

  • Allowing for extraneous field effects
  • Covariates
  • Practical exercises in GenStat

Multi - site Analysis

  • Combining many trials to find overall effects
  • Between site correlations

The workshop will be a mix of lectures and computer laboratory sessions. The afternoon Question sessions may be either computing or lecture style. Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea will be provided.
